High quality data based on effective inspection processes is essential for engineers and manufacturers to meet robust quality requirements and guarantee repeatability, accuracy and traceability. This may have been expensive to do in-house and time-consuming to outsource in the past, but with the arrival of Physical Digital’s ScanBox that has all changed.

Fastest high-resolution 3D scanning available in UK

The first and only one of its kind available as an independent service facility in the UK, the GOM ATOS ScanBox 5120 offers repeatable measurement capabilities for large batch measurement. Providing fully-automated inspection for components from 10mm3 to 2m3, the ScanBox service accurately measures the full-surface geometry of both freeform and geometric objects.

The system, which is able to scan multiple components simultaneously, provides the fastest method of high-resolution 3D scanning available in the UK. Based in a dedicated facility in the Midlands – the heart of British manufacturing – the ScanBox is operated by Physical Digital’s own fully-trained and accredited engineers.

Growing demand for high-accuracy 3D scanning

Tim Rapley, MD of Physical Digital, the UK’s primary GOM service provider, explains the growing requirement for high-resolution 3D scanning and inspection among his high-end clients: “When we talked to customers across a range of industries, but particularly in the aerospace and automotive sectors, we found significant interest in an out-sourced solution that could handle batch-inspection quickly and economically. That’s exactly what the ScanBox delivers; we design bespoke jigs and fixtures in-house, allowing for fast, precision scanning that produces reliable data more quickly than traditional CMMs or by manual methods and to resolutions up to 30µm. It’s the perfect solution for multi-part and high-volume projects.” Physical Digital was founded by Rapley over a decade ago in response to the need for high-accuracy mobile 3D scanning to support high-end companies in the automotive industry. It has earned an excellent reputation for quality and reliability and is trusted by many of the largest and most forward-thinking companies in the world.

Award-Winning Innovation

The innovative service offered by Physical Digital’s ScanBox facility has recently been recognised by the Federation of Small Business (FSB) Regional Business Awards, which awarded the company its prestigious Business Innovation Award 2015.

The judges noted the exceptional level of innovation shown in the introduction of the new ScanBox robot cell, recognising that the contract service it offers could transform British manufacturing by allowing companies to make use of world-class metrology without the need for costly capital expenditure.

Highly Trained Team

Rapley is rightly proud of his highly-trained and experienced team, which sets the award-winning firm above its competitors. All staff complete rigorous in-house and external training on the high-specification GOM systems used by the company and undertake national qualifications in Metrology offered and accredited by the National Physical Laboratory, the UK’s national Measurement Institute. One senior engineer is currently completing the world’s first Metrology foundation degree at Coventry University. Others are working towards Chartered Membership of IMechE and further Level 6 qualifications, complementing the teams’ years of experience.

Outsourced Metrology Solution

Many Production Managers and engineering professionals are already sending components to Physical Digital’s dedicated facility in order to benefit from the highest-resolution, fastest 3D scanning and inspection available as an outsourced solution in the UK.
