The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Pakistan Group held its 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 8 June, 2024, at Dilshad Hall, Ramada Plaza by Wyndham in Karachi.

This hybrid event featured insightful presentations on emerging technologies and industry trends, along with the announcement of the newly elected committee members for the 2024-2025 term. The event was attended by over 40 members, with sponsors including Millat Tractors, Marine Group, Sapphire Textiles, Dawlance, and organisations IET and ICE Pakistan Group.

Opening Address and Vision

The event began with a warm welcome from Dr. M. Tufail, CEng FIMechE, the immediate past Chair of IMechE Pakistan Group. He shared the Group’s vision and underscored the importance of developing industry-relevant skills among members. Dr. Tufail emphasised the need for continuous professional growth and active industry engagement to stay relevant in the fast-evolving engineering landscape.

Young Member's Panel Achievements

Engr. M. Owais Azhar AMIMechE, Chair of the Young Member’s Panel, highlighted the accomplishments of the Pakistan Group over the past year. He noted the establishment of three new IMechE student chapters in northern Pakistan and the expansion of the network to over 1,600 young member volunteers. These volunteers serve as vital links between the executive committee and student chapters, facilitating various technical activities and events.

Key events from the past year included the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Challenge, the Jibran Khalid Memorial Speak Out for Engineering, the Abul Kalam Design Challenge (AKDC), Truss n Toss, and the Automotive Bootcamp. These initiatives have significantly engaged engineering students in developing practical skills. Additionally, an IMechE podcast featuring Tom Owen on "Revitalising Mechanical Engineers" provided valuable insights for career counselling and skills development.

Looking ahead, Engr. Owais outlined plans for a national-level technical paper competition and activities focused on industrial digitalisation and Industry 4.0. A planned webinar series will address new industrial challenges and advancements, aimed at supporting the professional development of undergraduate engineering students.

Group Development and Future Focus

Engr. M. Hammad AMIMechE, the immediate past Hon. Secretary of the Pakistan Group, presented the development history of IMechE Pakistan Group over the past 15 years. He highlighted the dedicated efforts of the Patron and senior members in enhancing IMechE’s presence in academic institutions and establishing robust corporate relationships. Currently, Pakistan hosts 11 student chapters and 2 industrial divisions (power and automotive centre), supported by a dynamic volunteer network.

Membership levels have seen significant growth, reflecting increased interest from both academia and industry professionals. Facilities for professional development, including SRS Programs, Mentorship and Counselling, and Outreach & Membership facilitation, are successfully operational. Engr. Hammad emphasised future initiatives, such as enhancing industry-academia networking, raising awareness about emerging technologies, and advancing the UAS Advisory Board’s projects.

Election Results 2024-2025

The results of the executive committee elections for 2024-2025 were announced by Eur Ing Sarfaraz Ahmed, representative, CEng FICE UK, who served as the Independent Election Supervisor. He congratulated the newly elected members and commended the transparent election process.

Presentations by Eminent Speakers

Two-Wheeler Electric Vehicles in Pakistan: Challenges and Opportunities

Dr. Hashim Raza Khan from the Department of Electronics Engineering at NED University of Engineering and Technology presented on "Two-Wheeler Electric Vehicles in Pakistan: Challenges and Opportunities." He shared success stories of electric bikes like Nayal 3.8e and Nayal 8e (Beast), developed by his team to meet international standards and address the needs of middle-class Pakistanis. His presentation highlighted the potential for electric vehicles to revolutionise transportation in Pakistan.

Harvesting Water from Air via Atmospheric Water Generators (AWG)

Prof. Dr. Mubashir Ali Siddiqui, Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NED University of Engineering and Technology, discussed "Harvesting Water from Air via Atmospheric Water Generators (AWG)." He presented this innovative solution to water scarcity, emphasising the growing market potential of AWGs in both residential and agricultural sectors. His talk underscored the critical role of technology in addressing environmental challenges.

Steel Industry Contributions towards Country’s Economy

Yousuf H. Mirza, CEO of International Steels Limited, delivered a presentation on "Steel Industry Contributions towards Country’s Economy." He provided a comprehensive overview of the steel industry's historical progress and its significant role in economic development. By focusing on the fabrication of long and semi-finished products, Mirza illustrated how Pakistan’s steel industry can contribute substantially to the national economy.

Closing Addresses

Mr. Sikandar Mustafa Khan, CEng FIMechE, Chairman of Millat Tractors and Patron of the IMechE Pakistan Group, expressed his gratitude to the volunteers for their dedication. He envisioned a promising future through stronger industry-academia collaboration, emphasising the importance of continued effort and innovation.

Eur Ing Hafiz M. Mudassir, CEng FIMechE the newly elected Chair of IMechE Pakistan Group, concluded the event by thanking all attendees. He highlighted the numerous benefits available to professionals through the Group and encouraged active engagement in collaborative initiatives with IMechE Pakistan Group to drive mutual growth and development.

The event concluded with a lunch and networking session, providing participants an opportunity to connect and share insights.
