New Institution funding for schools, clubs and special activities

The Trustee Board Awards Committee has created two new financial awards to support members promoting the value of engineering through diverse inspiring activities.

The Institution is proud of its members’ enthusiasm for, and incredible work towards, promoting the value of engineering through a great range of inspiring activities.

Feedback from members who donate their time and expertise to work with children and young people, or who undertake extraordinary endeavours which promote the Institution and encourage greater understanding of engineering, shows that there is often a need for funding to help facilitate their projects.

Responding to members’ and volunteers’ requests for financial support for special projects and activities, the Trustee Board has set up two new forms of grants.

Alec Osborn, Chairman of TBAC said: "We noted an increase in demand for ‘ad hoc’ awards to assist with projects and events promoting and furthering mechanical engineering, and the Committee is pleased to introduce these two new awards to be able to meet the demand."

“Educational outreach continues to be a number one priority for our members. On a regular basis, very many of our members are undertaking voluntary work with primary or secondary school children or young adults. They are running activities that are making a real difference in inspiring youngsters and are opening their eyes to the possibilities of careers in engineering. Often, it is relatively small amounts of money – for example to purchase materials or equipment for school activities – which makes the biggest difference. The Committee is grateful to members for pointing out the need for this level of funding, and for being able to aid members in their inspirational volunteering.”

There are two financial awards available: the Schools and Clubs Engineering Challenge Award, which is available to support projects or activities in schools and clubs which promote mechanical engineering to children in primary and secondary education; and the Special Purpose Award, for one-off and special purposes such as funding of materials, research or educational visits that demonstrate the promotion or furtherance of mechanical engineering. The award is open to any individual, educational establishment or club.
