A £3,000 IMechE grant has been awarded to Monash Motorsport.

The Institution has awarded Monash University's Formula Student Racing team a £3,000 grant to help it race in the Formula Student competition.

The grant was awarded by Australia Branch Secretary Roshan Dodanwela who visited a team workshop on Friday 27 May 2016.

The student-run organisation from Monash University, also known as Monash Motorsport, will be competing in the German, Austrian and the UK competitions in the 2016 European season and in the Formula SAE Australian competition in December this year.

Radhika Sud, Business Leader of Monash Motorsport, said: “This year the team will be undertaking what is possibly its most ambitious European campaign to date. Along with the UK event we will also be attending two other official competitions in Austria and Germany. Hence, our expenses have increased from previous years. We now have to cover the costs of travelling to three competitions and paying registration fees for each.”

The grant will enable the organisation to design, construct and race a formula-style race car in the global engineering competition Formula Student which Sud explains facilitates the growth of university students in the fields of engineering, business and industrial design by creating innovative ideas, working with machinery and building professional relationships.

Sud added: “The grant will cover logistical costs for the students such as transporting our car and team members to the Silverstone race track. It will also aid with accommodation expenses such as camping ground hire, the purchasing of tents, sleeping bags and food.

“Another major benefit of the grant will be to help fund the purchase of our workshop supplies. Travelling internationally to compete means that we do not have all our usual workshop supplies at our disposal so it’s imperative that we substitute this.”

“The team was extremely grateful to the Institution for the award, especially since our campaign plans to be our biggest yet. It was lovely to meet Roshan Dodanwela, the Australia Branch Secretary and Brian Carter from CSIRO to strengthen our relationship with IMechE.”
