Engineers are invited to attend a forthcoming conference debating issues at the heart of engineering education and research in the UK.

Professors and Heads of Electrical Engineering (PHEE) holds its annual conference in conjunction with Professors and Heads of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (PHOMME) at One Birdcage Walk on 11 January 2017.

The conference is an opportunity for engineers in industry as well as leading educators to exchange ideas and debate the key topics of the day. Attendees from across sectors are welcome.

The first keynote address is The Higher Education and Research Bill, the speaker for which is to be confirmed.

The afternoon’s keynote speaker is Professor Dame Julia King DBE FREng, The Baroness Brown of Cambridge, who will speak about The Stern Review and Research Funding.

PHEE and PHOMME are sectoral groups of the Engineering Professors’ Council (EPC), working with universities, industry and professional bodies to promote and support the development of teaching, research and the profession.

Dr Colin Brown, the Institution's Director of Engineering, feels the coming together of this community of leading academics should attract a wide audience, including industry leaders and the Institution's affiliate and associate members who are aspiring to graduate and then progress to professional registration.

“Jointly with the IET it is very valuable once a year to hear the views first hand of our university leaders, who are shaping the teaching and research in our profession. This year they are coming to terms with proposed changes to both the Research Councils and the funding of their teaching all wrapped up in the context of operating outside of the European Union.

“Discussions around the presentations on the Higher Education and Research Bill and the rise of Degree Apprenticeships promise to be particularly lively.”

The one-day conference theme is, ‘The Future of Teaching and Research in Higher Education’. As well as leading academics there are representatives from the Department for Education, Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Network Rail, Shadow Robot Company and the recently created Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
