High speed train in China
High speed train in China

A new tour provides members with an exciting opportunity to experience historical and current engineering prowess in China.

Building on the successes of last year’s inaugural engineering study tour to India, designed in association with the Institution, Jon Baines Tours is pleased to announce it is running an Engineering in China tour to be held 9-22 November 2015.

This fascinating trip, led by Michael Knight FIMechE, past chairman of the Institution's South Wales region, looks at both historical and contemporary engineering in China.

Historically, China has been one of the most advanced nations on the planet, pioneering many traditional technologies, including the “Four great inventions”: the compass, gunpowder, paper-making and printing.

These early developments secured China’s status as a key global engineering and technological player, a title it maintains today and one which is demonstrated through modern creations such as its network of high-speed trains and its mighty Three Gorges Dam.

The 2015 tour has been specially designed to appeal also to non-engineering partners. As Michael Knight explains, it combines ‘visits to successful engineering organisations alongside a multitude of impressive Chinese cultural sites'.

Participants will enjoy a variety of fascinating professional visits and talks that provide an excellent insight into mechanical engineering in China.

They run hand in hand with the opportunity to experience a great number of breathtaking locations.

Those on the tour will be able to:

  • Travel by a variety of transport, from planes to trains, cars, bicycles and buggies and even a cruise.
  • Learn how the high-speed Zefiro trains are manufactured through a visit to the Bombardier Factory
  • Visit a steel mill, a traditional Jingtailan handicraft factory and a JCB factory – as well as a noodle-making workshop.

The rich alternative cultural programme visits dynamic modern Shanghai, historic Suzhou, colonial Qingdao, imperial Beijing, the ancient Silk Road city of Xian and the rural province of Guangxi, to give both partners and engineering professionals a fuller understanding of China’s culture, society and history.

Cultural highlights include taking the high speed train to Beijing, seeing the vast Tiananmen Square, visiting the impressive Forbidden City and the iconic Great Wall, as well as the amazing necropolis of the Terracotta Warriors.
