Jaguar Land Rover going electric from 2020

From 2020, every new car built by Jaguar Land Rover will be at least partly electrified, the company has announced.

The news follows a similar announcement from Volvo, which set a date of 2019 earlier this year.

Speaking at the inaugural JLR Tech Fest, Jaguar Land Rover’s CEO Ralf Spieth said the move would give customers “more choice”. “We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles. Our first fully electric performance SUV, the Jaguar I-PACE, goes on sale next year,” he said.

In his keynote speech at the event, Speth challenged governments to put the infrastructure in place to support the move to electric vehicles. “We can deliver electric vehicles," he said. "Where is the network of charging points? Where is the power grid?”

Tech Fest is a free event at Central St Martins in London which is open to the public from next year and showcases some of the technology JLR plan to integrate into their vehicles. This includes an electric version of the Jaguar E-type, and the Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE, a concept for an autonomous vehicle for 2040 (pictured).

This features an intelligent, voice activated AI ‘steering wheel’ that will be able to answer questions, give you the latest news, and even order you a pizza for when you get home.
