The Whitworth Scholarship Awards are prestigious awards aimed towards both new engineers embarking on the next stage of their career, and established engineers visualising their research goals.

There are two scholarship programmes available for applications:

The Whitworth Scholarship Awards (Undergraduate & Masters) is available to exceptional engineers who are ready to start or have already started a degree-level programme of any engineering discipline. The value of this programme fulfils the cost of up to 4 years full time study, with part-time and sandwich options available.

The Whitworth Senior Scholarship Awards (Postgraduate research) is an enhanced award open to Whitworth Award holders and Whitworth Scholars, and other eligible applicants who have completed a degree-level programme. The value of this programme fulfils 3 years full-time Postgraduate research leading to a MPhil, PhD or EngD, with a part-time option available.

There is a great deal to be gained from applying for the Awards. As well as meeting the financial cost of further study, on completion, an award holder will be entitled to use the title Whitworth Scholar, marking them out as an accomplished engineer as they progress through their career.

Do you have excellent academic ability, outstanding practical skills and the qualities required to succeed in industry? If so, then a Whitworth Scholarship may be for you!

Who is Sir Joseph Whitworth?

Sir Joseph Whitworth was born in Cheshire in 1803, and his passion for engineering stemmed from an early fascination with machinery – how it worked and how it could be improved. Starting out as a factory mechanic, Whitworth developed his skills and knowledge before starting his own business in Manchester in 1833, manufacturing machine tools. Quickly becoming renowned for the high quality of his products, Whitworth’s name was put on the map, and he received many awards for his outstanding innovations. In 1850 he became President of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

With the goal of advancing mechanical engineering, Whitworth’s dream was to bring ‘science and industry’ closer together, and he believed funding scholarships would bring this dream to fruition.

He founded The Whitworth Scholarships in 1868, with the aim to award those outstanding engineers who reflect his values – exceptional practical and academic skills, high levels of creativity and a determined mindset.

Winning this award has given me the greatest step forward in furthering my Engineering Academic career.
