2020 Election results announced

The International Young Member Committee elections for the roles of Chair and Vice Chair and Middle East & Africa and South Asia representatives took place in April/May 2020.

The successful candidates are:

International Young Member Committee

Chair: Ankit Sharma

Ankit Sharma  Starting his career in the water and wastewater field, Ankit wanted to learn more and improve his skill set through attending lectures and networking with industry forums. After becoming an Incorporated engineer in 2013 and through his IMechE association, he met process industry experts and furthered the knowledge. His work was published in water magazines and applied the skills in his various field projects. In 2016, attained chartership through CPD. In 2017, Ankit was elected as Young Members' Representative for SAR region. He closely worked with the Young Members Chairs of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to improve & increase regional Young Members activities by initiating Young Members Board formation in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and holding joint IYMC/YMB projects for the photo competition and video competition in 2018.

Vice Chair: Chua Yaw Long

Chua Yaw Long 300Chua graduated with a B.Eng (Aerospace) from Universiti Putra Malaysia and MSc in Control Systems from University of Sheffield, UK. He has served as lecturer in the mechanical engineering departments of various universities in Malaysia. Chua is an Academic Liaison Officer for IMechE UNITEN Student Chapter for three years. Actively engaging with IMechE in Malaysia, in South East Asia Region, and with Young Members Section from the SEAR region. Gaining invaluable experiences in handling Young Members' activities hoping to contribute more as IYMC Vice Chair.

Regional Chairs

The members who were successful in their bid to become Region Chair and Region Young Member Representative in the Institution’s Middle East & Africa and South Asia elections 2020:

South Asia

Regional Chair: Chanaka Wanniarachchi

Chanaka Wanniarachchi  Chanaka is a supply chain director for GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceuticals, responsible for two factories and end to end supply chain in Sri Lanka.  He gained hands-on experience as an engineer and health and safety professional for more than 20 years before moving in to general management. Chanka has experience in railway, glove manufacturing, ceramic tile manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries. His most treasured experience as an IMECHE volunteer is donating a building with a physics, computer lab to a rural school in Sri Lanka.

Regional Young Member Representative: Piyush Sethi

Piyush SethiPiyush has completed his mechanical engineering with specialization in Industrial Automation and is an associate member of IMechE with a total experience of over three years.

In his current role, as a mechanical engineer, he is working on continuous improvement projects to target increased productivity and defect free product by providing engineering solutions over the production line. Piyush has been volunteering for the IMechE India branch since 2015. He played a pivotal role in supporting the Engineer forum, SOFE, GED and other engineering events. He regularly interacts with other members to exchange knowledge and ideas He is a great motivator who has increased recognition of the IMechE amongst the public, profession and other stakeholders.

Middle East & Africa

Regional Young Member Representative: Umar S Subzwari

Umar S Subzwari As the son of a scientist, Umar always had a knack for engineering, owning his own toolkit by the age of five.  A fascination with cars led Umar to obtain a mechanical engineering degree from GIK Institute of Science and Technology, Pakistan (2013). Starting career with Honda Atlas Cars Pakistan he became AMIMechE in 2016. Umar joined Hub Power Company in 2014 and has worked at their flagship power plant hub(4x323 MW IPP) and their pioneering Thar Coal Fired power plant (2x330MW IPP) for Pakistan's energy security. His assignments have included business development, customer services, aftersales services, contracts, planning and engineering/maintenance.

Regional Chair

A second ballot will be held for the Regional Chair position. The results will be released in June 2020.

The Institution is pleased to announce the results of the 2020 Regional Elections.  We would like to welcome these newly-elected members as well as all the new volunteers who have been elected throughout the international network:

The Institution would like to take the opportunity to especially thank all the international volunteers who have stood down this year. Their contribution has made a significant difference to raise the profile of the Institution as well as support the international membership to grow. The work of the volunteers is an essential part of the Institution, without which we wouldn’t be achieving the successes we have seen over the last few years, especially in the international arena.

We welcome all members to join the Institution in congratulating the newly elected Regional representatives for the international network.
