Women are often under-represented in engineering, yet they continue to heavily contribute to the industry in growing numbers, slowly but surely narrowing the gender gap.
Let's not forget that since 11th century, women have contributed to the design and building of machines and structures, way before the term 'engineer' was even conceived.
Whilst there is still evidence of implicit bias against female engineers, we have seen greater numbers of women entering the profession and stepping into leadership positions, and as we celebrate our 175th Anniversary, we are proud to be led as an organisation by the notable Dr Alice Bunn FIMechE FRAeS.
As reported in June 2021 by Engineering UK, women now make up 14.5% of all engineers. Although this is a 25.7% increase since 2016 - we clearly still have a long way to go.
To celebrate International Women's Day, let's applaud some of the women who are leading the way Top 100 Women in Engineering | Inclusive Boards, such as:
Dr. Jane Atkinson - Executive Director Engineering and Automation for Bilfinger UK Ltd.
DAWN BONFIELD - Professor of Inclusive Engineering at Aston University
BRIDGET ROSEWELL - Senior Independent Director Appointed to the Network Rail Board
DR HAYAATUN SILLEM - Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Engineering
