Professor Sir Saeed Zahedi has been made an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to recognise his outstanding contribution to innovation and engineering in the field of rehabilitation.
Professor Zahedi is a pioneer in lower-limb prosthetics and has been a leader in engineering for four decades. His work has helped many thousands of amputees around the world, giving them back the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest.
He led the creation of the world’s first integrated, biomimetic prosthesis for lower-limb amputees, which uses micro-processor-controlled ankle and knee joints acting in synergy to mimic the movement and response of a human limb.
“It’s a great honour to receive this award which recognises the importance of engineering in medicine. This is one of the fastest growing areas of engineering, especially in my area of helping people with physical disability,” said Professor Zahedi.
Professor Zahedi is technical director at Blatchford, a leading manufacturer of some of the world’s most advanced prosthetic technology.
He is an award-winning author and presenter of over 125 papers, books and scientific publications, 35 patents and plays a leading role in a number of industry and professional regulatory bodies, particularly those pertaining to patient safety.
Professor Zahedi received his award from Institution President Joe McGeough at a ceremony at the Institution’s headquarters at One Birdcage Walk on 11 December.
