News and views from the IMechE

Improving the world through engineering starts with ensuring that engineers are the best they can be. As part of the institution’s investment in learning and development, it has acquired Argyll Ruane Ltd (ARL), a leading consultancy with an international reputation for quality in delivering non-destructive testing training, certification and consultancy.

Stephen Tetlow, chief executive of the institution, said: “Non-destructive testing is vital to a broad range of engineering sectors. Aligning the world-class professional standards of our institution with the experience of ARL in this specialist technology will bring a range of new training, inspection, certification and consultancy services to members.

“I see this as not only enabling new standards and techniques across many important industries – but also helping to advance the pace of innovation.”

Martin Dawson, founder of ARL, said: “Merging the great strengths of the institution and ARL will make our learning and development capability even stronger.

“In addition we will be able to play a wider role in the sharing of knowledge to provide businesses with leading-edge training, consultancy and certification services in an increasingly important field.”

The institution has also launched its 2013 learning and development programme of training for engineers. Andrew Spencer, the institution’s general manager for learning and development, said: “We’ve added Manchester and Bristol to Glasgow, Aberdeen and London as training locations. We are now offering technical training for the railway and automotive industry sectors to complement perfectly the ARL acquisition.

“Several new titles are available, including a qualification in project management, and we have introduced a multiple-booking discount scheme to offer real value for money – the Learning Pass.

“Next year’s innovative programme will ensure that the institution continues to offer the widest range of training.”
