Institution launches engineering workforce survey

Institution News Team

We’re conducting an ambitious new survey, to find out what it’s like to work in engineering today.

The Institution has partnered with Towers Watson to study the needs of the mechanical engineering workforce, and we’d like your input.

We’d like to know:

  • what motivates you, and other mechanical engineers, to work in engineering
  • what you like about your work
  • what you think could be improved

To help us gather the information, we're asking you - and other members - to complete a short questionnaire.

The questionnaire will only take you about 10 minutes and as a thank you for completing the survey, respondents will be eligible to enter a prize draw for a set of Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones, worth over £300.

During the questionnaire, you will be asked to provide your personal views on your immediate work environment and give your perspective on the wider professional landscape. All your responses will be treated confidentially and you will not be asked to provide your name or to identify your employer.

Please complete our questionnaire by 5 September 2014.

How the research will be used
The Institution and our research partner, Towers Watson, will use the feedback from the survey to compile the Mechanical Engineering Workforce Study, which will identify changes that could be made by employers, and other stakeholders, to enhance the experience of engineers around the world. Ultimately, our aim is to identify a path towards a vision of a highly regarded profession, able to attract and retain the very best talent.

Towers Watson, is a leading global professional services company with extensive experience in analysing employee benefits, rewards and talent management. It has collected information from various business sectors across the globe including financial services, healthcare and IT.

Through the study, the Institution and Towers Watson want to promote a better understanding of what it is like to work in engineering, and what engages and inspires individual members.

The study will look at how opinions vary in different parts of the world and in different industry sectors.
