As part of a visit encompassing business and university liaison, the Institution's CEO, Stephen Tetlow MBE, led a ceremony in Scotland to welcome 47 new members and Fellows to the Institution.

Stephen was accompanied by Sandra Mulligan, Business Development Manager (Scotland) at a meeting with Bryan Buchan, CEO of Scottish Engineering (SE), the major support and lobbying organisation for the manufacturing engineering industry in Scotland.

This was followed by a visit to the University of Strathclyde, where Stephen met with Professor Andrew Heyes BEng MSc PhD CEng FIMechE FHEA, Head of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and enjoyed a tour of the university’s new Technology Innovation Centre (TIC). The very informative tour of the TIC was led by Dr Steve Graham, Executive Director. Stephen gave a presentation focusing on Institution activity, and took part in a question and answer session with academic staff.

During an evening ceremony at the Trades Hall in Glasgow, Stephen was delighted to meet and congratulate 40 new members of the Institution, who have gained professional registration as Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng); and seven newly elected Fellows.

Stephen introduced and presented certificates to each of the new members and Fellows in turn. There was an opportunity for networking over a buffet after the presentations. Professor David Nash CEng FIMechE, past-Chair of the Scottish Region, kindly stood in for current Chair, Dr Alex Galloway CEng FIMechE, who was on a trip to China.

Sandra Mulligan said the evening illustrated the wide range of industries which support professionally registered engineers: “Many attendees have been in touch to thank the Institution's team for professional registration support, and to say they really enjoyed the event and the opportunity to meet engineers from diverse sectors across Scotland.

"A number of people are keen to volunteer as ambassadors, mentors and assessors, which is fantastic.”

The four new EngTech members included Suzanne Birney, one of three at the event who work for Doosan Babcock. In 2014, Suzanne was named the Institution's Bryan Hildrew Apprentice of the Year.

Four Incorporated Engineers (IEng) were also welcomed to Institution membership. These were: Colin Bolton, Babcock International Group; Eric Jordan, INEOS Chemicals Grangemouth Ltd; Stuart Laurie, DSM Nutritional Products; and Scott McDougall of Waukesha Bearings.

Thirty-two new Chartered Engineers were also presented with their certificates of professional registration with the Institution. Among them was Lynne McIntosh, who joined Rolls-Royce’s graduate trainee programme in 2010. Last year she joined the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) where she works as a Senior Manufacturing Engineer.

Also attending the evening to receive his certificate of chartership was Gus Harris-Reid, Chair of the Institution's Edinburgh and South East Scotland Young Members Panel. Gus is lead mechanical engineer on a laser production programme at Selex ES.

The seven Fellows elected to the Institution further reflected a range of knowledge and industry sectors, encompassing biomedical engineering and pharmaceuticals, marine, oil and gas, and aerospace.

Stephen’s visit to Scotland included an opportunity to connect with leading engineers when he visited BAE Systems Maritime, Naval Ships, at Scotstoun in Glasgow the following day. There, he was welcomed by Scott McClelland, Head of Engineering Business Management, and also attended presentations about educational outreach; and the work of a graduate and an apprentice engineer at the company.
