Institution celebrates new Members and Fellows in Glasgow

Institution News team

On Thursday 3 April, 48 new Members and Fellows of the Institution received certificates from the Institution’s president, Patrick Kniveton, at the Trades Hall in Glasgow.

Sandra Mulligan, Institution Business Development Manager for Scotland, gathered six new Fellows, one IEng member and 41 CEng Members in an evening which was all about congratulating them on their achievements. Five of those attending were from Vascutek Ltd; others came from companies including Rolls-Royce, Babcock, AMEC, Penman Engineering, GE and the NHS; and from the universities of Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Dr Alex Galloway BSc PhD CEng FIMechE, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Associate Dean (International) of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, was one of those honoured as a Fellow of the Institution. Alex, a highly active and committed volunteer, is currently Vice Chair of the Scottish Regional Committee, and will soon become its Chairman.

Speaking about the recent celebratory evening, Alex commented: “It was clear that the recipients were very honoured to be publicly recognised as full Members and Fellows. In my case, being recognised as a Fellow of an Institution with such a global reputation for professional excellence, reassured me that my academic and industrial standing has been further elevated by receipt of this award. This is important given the ever increasing need to be recognised as an academic professional.”

Eur Ing Dougal White CEng FIMechE, a widely experienced engineer for Weir Group, has been mentoring young engineers since 1974. He has supported the Institution by undertaking Professional Review Interviews for a number of years and was honoured by Patrick Kniveton, having recently become a Fellow.

Dr Andrew Mathieson MEng(Hons) PhD CEng MIMechE is a Research Associate in the Space, Power and Energy Division at the School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. He said: “Achieving the status of Chartered Engineer was one of my main career objectives after graduating. But it is only after attaining professional registration that I started to fully appreciate how highly regarded it is across the engineering disciplines and wider community in general.”

Another of the Institution’s very active and engaged volunteers, Alistair Choat CEng MIMechE attended the evening. He joined Babcock International Group as a graduate in 2006 and is now Senior Project Engineer.

Ally said: “The new members’ event was an excellent evening. It was very interesting to see the range of people who had achieved CEng in the area and the variety of companies and specialities that were represented. Personally, CEng status represents recognition that I’ve applied the scientific knowledge that I gained from university and through my career in a positive and useful way. It shows that my work within the Institution to promote engineering at area level, and more recently with the Young Members Board, is acknowledged and appreciated.”

Brothers Gavin McCarte CEng MIMechE, who works for Jacobs, and Jamie McCarte CEng MIMechE of Vascutek, were both delighted to achieve chartership at the same time.

Asked if brotherly rivalry had inspired them to become Chartered at the same time, or if it was just by chance, Jamie responded: “As much as I’d like there to be a story involving fierce brotherly rivalry, it really was by pure coincidence that we both achieved chartered status around the same time! I have to admit, seeing my younger brother achieve Chartered status through MPDS gave me the impetus to finally get my own application submitted, which I originally thought I’d manage to sneak in first!

“Both of us becoming Chartered, and also being from completely different backgrounds with experience in medical devices, the power industry, nuclear and defence and the water industry, really highlights the diversity of the profession and makes us equally proud to be members of the Institution.”

Sandra Mulligan, Business Development Manager, Scotland, was delighted to welcome new Members and Fellows from so many companies across the country.

Thanking them for the work they do to support employees’ professional development in partnership with the Institution’s objectives to increase professional registration, she said: “Arranging the New Members Awards ceremonies in Scotland is one of the really enjoyable parts of my role. After the hard work required to demonstrate competence and gain registration, it’s great to see the achievements of our members recognised at these events. It also provides partners of members with an opportunity to gain an insight into the work of the Institution. Feedback from members who attended has been fantastic and we’re currently in the process of arranging a similar event in Aberdeen on 20 May, which I’m sure will be another great night.’’

Sandra provides guidance and support in the region for all engineers who wish to gain EngTech, IEng or CEng registration. Please contact her if you live or work in Scotland and need advice on your route to professional status: s_mulligan@imeche.org
