It all began by inviting the Chairman of the Institution's Malaysian Branch, Ir. Mathew Thomas to give a briefing about the benefits of IMechE to the staff and students at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University Malaysia Pahang in Pekan in the state of Pahang on 27 November 2014. Immediately after the briefing, IMechE members of staff at the Faculty took the initiative to establish a Student Chapter. Finally, after several plans and preparation, the Student Chapter was officially launched in the presence of the Faculty Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Rizalman Bin Mamat, the Chairman, IMechE Malaysia Branch, Academic staff and students of the Faculty on 26 February 2015.

In his opening speech, the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering warmly welcomed IMechE to UMP. He assured that the Mechanical Engineering students will give full support to all IMechE activities. He also promised a continuous support from the Faculty for the smooth running of the Student Chapter. The Faculty’s as well as the Dean’s personal commitment could be seen from the onset by him calling for cancellation of all classes during the launching ceremony.

Ir. Mathew Thomas speaking on behalf of the IMechE, acclaimed that UMP is the fastest establishment of IMechE Student Chapter in Malaysia which took only two months from the first briefing to meet all the criteria to form a student chapter. He also pledged continuous support from the Young Members Section (YMS) of IMechE Malaysia Branch and from the Branch main committee.
Right after the talk, Ir. Mathew officially launched the IMechE student chapter in UMP by presenting the certificate of launch to the Dean. He has also presented two banners of IMechE to UMP Student Chapter’s ALO, Dr. Ftwi Yohaness Hagos and Protem President of the Student Chapter, Mr. Balakumaran A/L Yeesvaran for their use.

After the presentation of the certificate and banners, Ir. Mathew briefed the benefits of membership of IMechE to the audience. On behalf of the Chairman of YMS Mr. Chen Khin Fai, he also presented the annual activities and competitions that the YMS holds and encouraged UMP SC members to be involved with these activities as well. He emphasised to the Protem Committee for their commitment and to ensure continuity of the chapter. As volunteer Ambassadors of IMechE it was their duty to promote IMechE and reaching the general public.

Mr. Balakumaran
The Protem President on his part presented the annual activities planned until the election of the new committee. He has request for a continuous support from both the Faculty as well as from IMechE Malaysian Branch. He also promised for a continuous engagement with the members and a periodic membership drive to reach new arrivals.

The last event based on the itinerary was the technical talk entitled “Industry Expectations and New Engineering Graduates”. The talk was presented by Mr. Devarajan Ramasamy based on his personal experienced in the automotive industry during his early Engineering practice.

The program was concluded by presentation of token of appreciation by the Faculty to Ir. Mathew Thomas and the Technical Speaker, Mr. Devarajan Ramasamy. Ir. Thomas on his part presented a token of appreciation to the Dean of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
