Student Affiliate members at the DSU Student Chapter
A IMechE student group established at a University in Karachi, Pakistan is on course to reach 150 members by the end of the next term.
The group at DHA Suffa University (DSU) was launched earlier this year at an inaugration ceremony attended by more than 200 people. The student chapter has already organised several events and won prizes in national level aerospace competitions.
DHA Suffa University opened its doors to students in 2012 and offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in engineering , computer science and management sciences. DSU has a capacity of 3000 students on a five acre campus and there are plans to build a second residential campus, able to accommodate 11000 students, 700 faculty members and 2000 non-teaching staff.
Utbah Naseer, chair of the IMechE student chapter said the set-up of the student group had been positively received by students. “We aim to help engineering students realise their full potential and make the most of their engineering careers. The chapter network also provides a great opportunity to interact with engineers in other institutions and in the industry,” he said.
“Suffa University Engineering Labs [SUEL]has been our prime jewel so far. It has proven itself to be a catalyst for extra-curricular projects at DSU, with students collaborating with their teachers and industrialists.”

“The first project under the SUEL banner was a RC plane designed and built by mechanical engineering students, which pulled off the fastest lap title at Propellair '15, an event organised by an IMechE student chapter at a different University. It completed the flight in just 18 seconds and has gone on to win prizes at two other national competitions.”
Naseer added that the DSU IMechE chapter has many events planned over the next year, including technical competitions, workshops, public welfare projects and social events.
“The biggest and most eagerly awaited event is the International Research Conference planned for June 2016,” he said. “It will be attended by researchers from Germany, Malaysia, China and hopefully Turkey and Spain as well. It is the first time that an Engineering Conference will be organized at DSU and I think the first time an international event has been organised by any Student Chapter in Pakistan.”
The international research conference is to discuss the theme of Industrial Control and Smart Materials.
