The Institution of Mechanical Engineers had a prominent stand at The Greatest Gathering in Derby, where visitors could also enjoy free rides on our Railway Challenge locomotives.

The three-day event, part of Railway 200 — a year-long celebration marking two centuries since the world’s first passenger railway journey — brought together an unprecedented collection of historic and modern rolling stock.

Iconic and modern trains showcased together

More than 140 locomotives and railway vehicles were on display, including the iconic Flying Scotsman and examples of the latest high-speed designs. Hosted at Alstom’s Litchurch Lane Works, the UK’s largest train manufacturing facility, this was the first time the site had opened to the public in nearly 50 years.

IMechE volunteers welcome all - a true team effort

Our team of IMechE volunteers were on hand throughout the weekend to welcome guests and champion the Institution’s work in rail engineering. Among the thousands of visitors was IMechE Rail Division Chair Rebeka Sellick, who said:

“Not only did we speak to engineers, potential engineers, and railway enthusiasts who visited the IMechE stand during The Greatest Gathering weekend, but many also enjoyed free rides on locomotives designed, built, and driven by the Railway Challenge student teams from Sheffield and Derby Universities, and from Alstom. Thanks to everyone who helped spread the IMechE message — sharing information on career development for professionals, and resources to inspire children and young people to become our future engineers.”

Over 40,000 visitors, some travelling from as far afield as New Zealand, explored the exhibits, spoke with engineers, and experienced first-hand the evolution of railway technology.

Engineering creativity in motion

The IMechE stand drew strong interest from both enthusiasts and industry professionals, with members ready to discuss engineering challenges, career opportunities, and the Institution’s role in advancing railway innovation. The Railway Challenge locomotives proved a particular highlight, offering passengers a practical demonstration of creative engineering in motion.

Event organiser Ben Goodwin hailed the gathering as “a resounding success” and “a unique moment in railway history” — a celebration not only of past achievements, but of the engineering expertise driving the future of rail transport.
