IMechE’s Tribology Silver Medal 2025 Winner Announced

The Institution is proud to announce Professor Mark Rainforth FREng as the recipient of the 2025 Tribology Silver Medal.

Professor Mark Rainforth has been given this award in recognition of his four decades of pioneering research and leadership in the field of tribology and materials science.

Professor Rainforth, recently appointed Emeritus Professor at the University of Sheffield, is internationally renowned for advancing the understanding of tribological mechanisms in metals and ceramics. 

A Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Professor Rainforth has authored over 400 papers in leading journals. He has received numerous honours, including the Bessemer Gold Medal (2024) and the IOM3 Rosenhain and Verulam Medals. His exceptional scientific insight and sustained impact make him a worthy recipient of the Tribology Silver Medal 2025.
