Group Captain Tone Baker, Station Commander, celebrated the achievements of Senior Aircraftman Stuart Thompson at an award ceremony at RAF Cosford on 11 April.

Stuart received the 2017 IMechE Award for Outstanding Performance by an Aircraft Mechanical Trainee at the No 1 School of Technical Training in recognition for his commitment and dedication to his Mechanical training course. Stuart achieved the highest marks for the year with a 94% course average and 100% in both Electronic Engine Control Systems examinations, regarded as the most difficult and complex subjects of the course.

Stuart said: “To win the award means that the hard work and the graft has paid off, it's really satisfying and I am very pleased for that to be acknowledged. I was proud enough to have completed the course never mind to have won the award, it gives me a great sense of pride and I'm very grateful.”

Stuart is currently posted to II (AC) Squadron as a mechanical aircraft technician at RAF Lossiemouth on Typhoon aircraft.  He explained: “I am posted to what is called first line on the squadron which means we work on the live aircraft which are flying on a daily basis. My responsibilities are to maintain any mechanical components and aspects of the aircraft to keep them serviceable.”

He continued: “I'd like to urge anyone considering joining to become an aircraft technician to do it, it's so rewarding and I truly love my job. The diversity, the challenges, the travel and the sense of achievement are great. Not to mention all of the extra perks that being in the RAF provides.”

Wing Commander Jim Thorley, Officer Commanding No 1 School of Technical Training at RAF Cosford and Fellow of the IMechE said:

“I am grateful to the IMechE for its support of the award as it undoubtedly aids us in promoting excellence amongst our trainees, and the association helps in the drive for professionalism in Royal Air Force Engineering.”

Jill Dwyer, IMechE Defence Liaison Officer, congratulated Stuart on his outstanding performance and presented a certificate and a cheque for £250 to mark the achievement. Stuart also had his name engraved on a hand finished trophy, which was created in the workshops at RAF Cosford, and remains on display as a permanent recognition of achievement.
