The Universiti Teknologi Petronas has officially launched its own student chapter, with the Chair of the IMechE Malaysia branch praising the hard work carried out to set up the new group.

Oficially launched during the summer, the Student Chapter of the Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has taken nine months to meet all the required criteria and become established.

Mathew Thomas, chair of the IMechE Malaysia branch, presented an official certificate during the launch event to Dr Ir Masri Bin Baharom, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at UTP.

Thomas said: "My special thanks goes to all for their commitment and hard work to launch the student chapter. The challenge is now to maintain it and this also lies with the Academic Liaison Officer and the ongoing continuity of the election of office bearers in the coming years and their drive and commitment.

“Next year we'll be holding more collaborative events with other Institutions, Learned Societies and organising more technical visits. Plus the Student Chapters are becoming more active with their own initiatives.”

Following the launch of the UTP Student Chapter, Monash University Malaysia (MUM) Student Chapter held the second ever Malaysia Engnow competition.

Engnow is split into two categories – 'Speak Out for Engineering' and the design competition and provides a platform for young members to develop their technical and presentation skills.

This year 15 entrants presented to a panel of three judges in both categories for 20 minutes each talking either about a subject related to mechanical engineering, or describing the design to help the hearing impaired.

The winner of the Speak out for Engineering category was Vishant Selvarajah, with Rumey Samath as runner-up. In the design category on the theme "Devices to help the Hearing Impaired", the Team UNITEN (Universiti Tenaga Nasional), won first prize, with the Team from Monash University Malaysia runners up for their design.

Thomas said: “We were pleased with the increased number of individual entries for the SOfE Competition. Interest is growing in the event and if finance permits we would like to make it bigger in future years.

“But we are encouraging more teams to come forward for the design competition. There is greater team effort required for it and we are going to start promoting earlier to encourage and attract more participating teams.”
