The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has awarded its prestigious Engineering Heritage Award to Hong Kong Tramways, recognising the tram system’s unique design, historical significance, and enduring contribution to the city’s public transport network.
This marks the first time the award has been presented in China. Established in 1904, Hong Kong Tramways remains one of the most iconic and enduring double-decker tram systems in the world. Its continuous operation for over 120 years, coupled with its cultural importance, sustainable design, and affordability, sets it apart from other historic tram systems. Today, it continues to provide reliable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly transport across a dense urban landscape, serving both residents and tourists alike. The IMechE Engineering Heritage Award celebrates engineering achievements that have had a significant impact on society and stand as landmarks of innovation. The committee noted that Hong Kong Tramways is a rare example of a transport system still fulfilling its original design purpose more than a century after its inception. “We are proud to present Hong Kong Tramways with the Institution’s first Engineering Heritage Award in China,” said Chris Chong, IMechE International Vice President, who presented the plaque. “This award honours not just the longevity of the tramway, but its ingenious double-decker design, seamless integration into the city, and enduring role in providing sustainable, accessible transportation. It is a shining example of engineering that has stood the test of time.” Paul Tirvaudey, Managing Director of Tramways stated, "Receiving this international honour is a tremendous encouragement for our company. I am delighted that Tramways’ efforts to advance with times and stay innovative have been recognised. The trams, which serve about 150,000 passengers daily and run through the bustling city centres on the Hong Kong Island, are all manufactured locally. While our trams retain their nostalgic traditional appearance, we continuously refine engineering aspects, such as modernising the tram body with aluminium as a substitute for wood and adopting to alternating current (AC) power systems, to enhance energy efficiency and durability. Looking forward, Tramways will continue to uphold our ‘old in age, young at heart’ spirit, to carry on our legacy by driving innovation." Hong Kong Tramways joins a distinguished list of awardees around the world whose engineering significance has been recognised by IMechE. Hong Kong is the Institution’s largest overseas branch with over 3,000 members.
