DP world will conduct feasibility studies on Hyperloop One moving containers from ships docked in Dubai

Hyperloop One has announced a partnership with DP World, one of the world’s largest port-terminal operators, to explore the use of its high-speed travel technology in the freight sector.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between DP world and US-based Hyperloop One will see the companies conduct feasibility studies to analyse the value of using Hyperloop systems in the United Arab Emirates. The initial focus will be on moving containers from ships docked at DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali Port via the Hyperloop tube to a new inland container depot in Dubai.

Hyperloop one is a concept train originally proposed by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk. It is expected to have top speeds of 760 mph and use linear induction motors, of a similar type to those used to propel Maglev trains today. The mile-long capsules could carry 28 passengers or cargo and would be fitted with a fan and air compressor to transfer high pressure air from the front to the rear of the capsules. The system would be fuelled by solar panels mounted on the top of the steel tube and batteries.

The initial study with DP World will focus on efficient handling of containers, costs, benefits, demand and volume patterns of moving cargo using the new technology.

DP World Group chief executive Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said: “The world is changing at a pace never seen before in our history and we intend to be part of a new revolution in transport, connecting markets and economies around the world.

“The potential to use these kind of technologies in emerging markets outside the UAE such as Africa and Asia with large land mass is significant."

Rob Lloyd, chief executive at Hyperloop One, said: “Hyperloop One is pleased to extend our global footprint into the Middle East with the signing of the MOU with the United Arab Emirates and DP World. This partnership allows us to embrace the innovation of the UAE and to utilise the creativity of DP World, while expanding the variety of use cases for Hyperloop.”
