FSUK announces aligned ruleset for 2018

Formula Student Team

The FSUK Committee has been working closely with other European competitions with a view to having an aligned set of rules for 2018, enabling teams to compete at as many different events in Europe as they wish.

Dan Jones, Chief Technical Scrutineer and Vice Chairman of the FSAE Rules Committee, announced at Learn To Win on Friday 13 October at The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry, that the base ruleset for FSUK Class 1 teams is the ‘Formula Student Rules 2018’, which can be downloaded here: https://www.formulastudent.de/fileadmin/user_upload/all/2018/rules/FS-Rules_2018_V1.1.pdf

Dan explained that there would be some UK specific supplementary rules, released mid-November and these would comprise variations to document submission deadlines, penalties, points distribution between events, specific rules for static and dynamic events plus some technical differences required by the UK motorsport governing body the Motor Sport Authority (MSA).  A summary of these was presented to attendees at Learn To Win and will shortly be available to all FS teams via the FSUK website.

Dan stressed that, in terms of the car concept, there is very little difference between Formula Student and FSAE rules, therefore it is possible to build a car to either rulebook and compete at an event operating under the other rules with minimal or no changes to the car.  He pointed out that the biggest difference between the two rulesets is philosophical rather than technical, with the Formula Student rules not having so much of the ‘advisory’ text as the FSAE rules.

Another big change for 2018 is that the Cost & Manufacturing event will follow the Formula Student Cost format. Full details of this can be found within the Formula Student Rules 2018 at the above link. The event’s Head Cost Judge presented the key differences to a captive audience in Coventry and this presentation will also be available to all FS teams via the FSUK website in the coming weeks.

2018, FSUK 20th anniversary, is shaping up to be an exciting landmark and we hope that these changes will contribute to the overall inclusivity and make for a highly competitive event next July.
