The Delft team unveiled their brand new car, the DUT16 earlier this month at the Market Square in Delft, The Netherlands. Tom Coil, Chief Engineer of the project commented: "The most unique thing about the DUT16 is the way in which the wheels are powered."

The global competition, run by the Institution, is the world’s largest student motorsport event and challenges student engineers to design, build and race a single seat racing car in one year.
Participating in the Institution’s festival of motorsport is a unique selling point for students who later apply to enter the engineering sector, as the event is widely recognised as one of the most prestigious and relevant in industry circles.
This year’s event will see 117 teams from 33 countries going head-to-head to take the crown of best team. Top performing UK teams like the University of Bath, Oxford Brookes University and the University of Birmingham will be hoping to achieve podium finishes and maybe even push the Dutch team all the way.
A big feature this year is the number of electric cars taking part. Thirty-two electric vehicles have been accepted this year, which is the highest number ever, and reflects a shift in the industry. There are still a great deal of factors to weigh up when teams decide to start running an electric vehicle and it isn’t necessarily the best option for all teams.
Watch a live stream of Formula Student
Fans wanting to watch highlights from the event can visit the Formula Student website or the GKN website to watch a live broadcast of the event from 14:00 BST on 14 July though to 17 July. Visit the GKN website or the Formula Student website to watch.

The event is also a major incentive for any student who aspires to have a career in the motorsport industry. It teaches many things alongside technical engineering skills which would be learnt as part of an engineering, such as team working, budgeting and working to deadlines.
A lot of companies will look for Formula Student on a job application straight away if they know that their university has taken part. As it’s an extra-curricular activity, the dedication is as important as engineering skill and acumen, but in the end the experience gained far outweighs the time you spend working on the car.
The competition takes place just days after the Silverstone Grand Prix, so competitors are there working in the pit lane just days after the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have been there with Mercedes and Ferrari.
This year sees a Sri Lankan team entering Formula Student for the first time. The other teams will be from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey, UK and Ukraine.
