Andrew McNaughton will oversee development of the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon

Tidal Lagoon Power has appointed former Balfour Beatty chief executive Andrew McNaughton as director of engineering and construction.

McNaughton will oversee development of the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon as well as the company's other planned projects.

He previously spent 17 years at Balfour Beatty as chief operating officer and chief executive. He has also served as a vice-president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, is a UK Business Ambassador for the current UK government and is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

McNaughton previously worked as a project manager and executive officer on projects including Terminals 2 and 5 at Heathrow, the widening of the M25 and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

McNaughton said: "Every so often, the UK infrastructure industry witnesses a major project with the ability to redefine the sector worldwide.

"The Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is one such project, with a team and tier one supply chain that combines the best of British infrastructure with international expertise of the highest calibre."

Tidal Lagoon Power expects to submit a full planning application for Tidal Lagoon Cardiff in 2017, with a decision then expected in 2018. The lagoon will take up to five years to build. The company estimates a CFD strike price requirement of £90-£95/MWh for the project.
