The Mustang Mach–E, Ford’s new all-electric car, has set a new record for the shortest time spent charging while on a journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The vehicle was plugged in for just 43 minutes and 13 seconds in a single charging session during the 840-mile drive from Britain’s southern tip to its most northern point.

The feat, which was conducted last month and confirmed by Guinness World Records, involved fast charging the rear-wheel drive, extended range version of the car, with 10 minutes of charge at 150kW adding around 73 miles of range.

That clinched the records for shortest charge time, and fewest stops, adding to the vehicle’s previous record of lowest energy consumption by an electric car, attained on economy runs over the summer when it travelled 6.5 miles per kWh.

“As deliveries ramp up, customers can be assured of Mach-E’s viability for daily use – as evidenced by this triple record-breaking performance, even on the UK’s most extreme journey,” said Tim Nicklin, Ford’s electrification manager.

“Ford’s own Go Electric report on consumer perceptions reveals that the average range which the public thinks an electric car can travel is under 150 miles. If the Mach-E can achieve well over three times that distance in the hands of professionals, and under 45 minutes of top-up charging en route, it can easily accommodate customers’ everyday requirements.”
