I thought you might be interested in my experience with my first car.

A 1932 Ford Popular, £70 paid, it used a lot of oil so I dismantled the engine, and reboard it on the milling machine, over sized pistons! I had no honing equipment so it was not very successful, so I decided to put in a reconditioned engine. I lived in Huddersfield so one Saturday I went to Halifax for a reconditioned short engine, £16 after saving up to pay for it, came home, and after breakfast lifted out the engine (standing on the two mudguards ) with a rope round it, having removed the carburettor and exhaust manifolds etc. Put in the new engine in the same way, and fitted the parts taken from the old engine. It was done in my 16 by 8 wooden garage. Mid afternoon, I set off with my Wife to Halifax to return the old engine, and then on to Bradford to a cinema it was just 4pm when we sat down to see the film.

When I look under the bonnet of my modern car it sounds impossible. At a later date I fitted a new crown, and pinion, it cost £3 can you believe it?
