100 students will each receive sponsorship packages worth £10,000

Car giant Ford has announced a £1 million plan to offer scholarships to 100 students.

The US-owned firm said its UK university scholarship programme in technical and innovation fields marked 100 years of Ford's commitment to the UK.

Under the Ford Blue Oval Scholarship Programme, 100 student scholarships will be offered - one for each year of the company's operation in the UK - at leading universities to encourage a new generation of engineers, scientists and innovators.

William Clay Ford, executive chairman of Ford Motor Company, announced the scholarship programme at London's Science Museum, saying: “I am pleased to be able to support a new generation of technical innovators that can play a part in shaping the future of mobility in our next 100 years.”

Ford is offering sponsorship of £10,000 per student over a three-year period on a selection of engineering, science, manufacturing and technology courses at universities in the UK.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Ford has a long and proud history in the UK. Supporting the next generation of talented engineers in this country is a fitting way to mark their 100 years here.

“Coupled with its £1.5 billion investment in greener manufacturing, it is helping to shape the future of the automotive sector in this country.

“Boosting our skills base and developing a low-carbon economy are essential if we are to move towards a more sustainable, balanced economic model.”
