Event: Cold and dark by 2050

The EEESTA 2015 seminar will explore issues such as how we are to meet energy demands created by population growth, writes the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group (EESG).

EEESTA 2015 Prestige Seminar will take place on Wednesday 11 November 2015 – 18:45 to 21:30 at Weston Auditorium, De Havilland Campus, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, AL10 9EU

By 2050 our planet’s population is expected to reach 9 billion people and our demand for energy at current rates of growth will be two and a half times that of today. How are we to match supply against demand in a world already post ‘peak oil’ and with an increasing proportion of intermittent renewables in our energy mix? Are we at a pivotal point in mankind’s relationship with energy and the environment? The EEESTA 2015 seminar intends to explore these issues and more.

The Chairman will be Malcolm Grimston, Associate Fellow, Chatham House. 

The topics will include:
Demand Reduction - Peter Guthrie, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development

Supply Options - John Loughhead, Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Energy and Climate Change

Inter-relationship between supply and demand - Prof. Goran Strbac, Chair in Electrical Energy Systems, Imperial College London

This evening seminar is the seventeenth annual prestige seminar organised by EEESTA CIC as a joint event with various professional science and engineering Institutions: the Institution of Mechanical Engineers is the Principal Partner with particular input from the Institution’s Energy, Environment & Sustainability Group.

This free event is hosted by the University of Hertfordshire and will commence with refreshments and networking in an informal environment.

An essential element of the prestige seminar is the final chaired discussion when the audience can put forward their views and questions to the speakers and debate some of the issues discussed.
