News, rumours and gossip from the world of engineering
In a bizarre and slightly dystopian new TV dating show called Game of Clones, singletons will be asked to build digital versions of their perfect partners. The participants will be given access to the “latest avatar building technology” to create their vision of perfection, choosing everything from hair and eye colour to build and height. The show’s organisers will then search the country to find 10 real suitors that fit this ideal image. The avatar doppelgangers will then enter a house together with the singleton to try and win their heart. Since when did dating shows start stealing plots from Isaac Asimov and Philip K Dick?
Elon Musk, the enigmatic entrepreneur behind electric car company Tesla, is known for building humour into his inventions. The latest has been caught on camera at his Gigawatt battery factory. Robots used to transport equipment were found to play the theme music from Indiana Jones as they worked. Whether simply a nod to one of Musk’s favourite films, or used to symbolise the intrepid adventure being undertaken at the Nevada factory to push forward battery technology, we do not know.
The Great British Bake Off has been in the headlines after the beloved BBC show was sold to C4. This ruckus has overshadowed the amazing feats on this year’s show by competitor Andrew Smyth, a Rolls-Royce engineer. So far he has created a 3D gingerbread representation of his time punting down the river Cam. He plans to bake a baguette Concorde. Let’s hope he rockets to victory.
