Institution news
In recent years, the Arnold Barks Christmas Lecture, held at the Salisbury Arts Centre, has featured speakers such as Tony Parraman and Richard Noble of Bloodhound SSC, and Baroness Susan Greenfield CBE, the eminent neuroscientist.
The organisational triumph of Alan Park, Chair of the Salisbury area committee, and his Institution colleagues, the event characteristically enthuses so many children throughout the day that they wish to return, bringing family, for the evening lecture. It’s a great opportunity for all age-groups to interact with this important topic and learn from world experts. Members are encouraged to book their tickets without delay. The event is also open to the general public.
Professor John Shepherd CBE FRS, a Professorial Research Fellow at the National Oceanographic Centre, University of Southampton and foremost authority on the science of climate change, will lead a team of scientists, engaging with nearly 1200 school children in the Salisbury area during the day, after which he will deliver his evening presentation, for which tickets are priced at £10. A reception with drinks and canapés follows the lecture.
The science of climate change predicts global warming of several degrees Celsius by 2100. Can science and technology provide the solutions necessary for the reductions that we, as a global society, must make?
Professor Shepherd, commenting recently on the IPCC AR5 Summary for policymakers, said: “The evidence is very clear that the world is warming, and that human activities are the main cause. Natural changes and fluctuations do occur but they are relatively small. Uncertainty is a reason to be cautious, but not a reason to do nothing.”
He also suggested: “The recent slow-down in warming is interesting, but it may still be just a wiggle, maybe caused by a natural cycle in the ocean. If so, we should expect more rapid warming in a few years time.”
Don’t miss the opportunity to understand the facts about this crucial data, and engage with scientists at the forefront of research into climate change.
