Meet our Volunteer Service Award winners 2018

The International Strategy Board (ISB) Volunteer Award for Meritorious Service rewards international members for their exceptional contribution and dedication to the Institution’s international network.

The Institutions International Strategy Board is pleased to announce the winners of the Volunteer Award for Meritorious Service 2018 as:

Prof Ir Dr Kok Seng Ong

Prof Ir Dr Kok Seng OngProf Ong has been a member of the Institution since his student days at Imperial College London in 1964; he is currently one of the longest active members of IMechE in Malaysia.  Prof Ong is a FIMechE, (1991), CEng UK, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (1990) and a Registered Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (1974).

Prof Ong was one of the founding members of IMechE Malaysia Branch in 1997. He was Protem Chairman for three consecutive terms - 1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/2000 - during which time he provided valuable leadership and guidance towards the formation of the Malaysia Branch in 2000 by obtaining the approval of the Registrar of Societies, Malaysia. At the first AGM in 2001, Prof Ong was elected the inaugural Chairman for the term 2001/02 and re-elected for 2002/03 and served as Chairman for three further terms - 2009/10, 2016/17, 2017/18. He has extensive experience and insight in Institution matters contributing his leadership skills to the Malaysia Branch and continues to provide invaluable guidance in the affairs of the Branch to various Malaysia Branch committees to date where he is immediate Past Chairman.

Prof Ong was also a founding member of the Malaysian Chapter of ASHRAE and held various posts such as President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary from 1987-1991. He was the Honorary Engineering Consultant to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society and UNHCR from 1985-1991. He was awarded the Malaysian Red Crescent Society Meritorious Service Medal in 1990.

Daniel Fayolle

Daniel Fayolle Daniel Fayolle has long been involved in volunteer work for IMechE Groupe France. He has been a volunteer for IMechE Groupe France since 2002 and has occupied all key positions on the Groupe France Committee since joining. Daniel has been Chairman for two periods of three years and is currently the Honorary Treasurer. Daniel has been a Member of the Council in London since 2011, has sat on the Strategy Advisory Committee for two years and the Council Coordination Committee for three years and has been a member of the IMechE Power Industries Board since October 2015. He is an active member of IESF, the French engineers’ association, in both the UK and France and is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers in London.

Daniel Fayolle has provided exceptional long-standing service for IMechE in France for 16 years, in addition to serving on other committees in the HQ. Daniel, who is now approaching 69 years old, has been very concerned with the continuity of IMechE in France. He has put in a lot of effort to stay serving on the IMechE committee in France until the recruitment of other reliable and active members take place. Mr. Fayolle is coaching and guiding the new committee members to ensure a high level of services will continue to be provided to IMechE members in France, up to the standards and reputation of lMechE.

Daniel has been involved in a large number of major international power projects in Asia and Africa among which some prominent hydropower, including variable speed pumped storage hydropower plants and high voltage transmission projects up to 500 kV. Daniel is a founding partner of Power Consulting Associates in France, a Judicial Expert with the French Appeal Court and an Expert in Arbitration with a number of International Arbitration Courts. He is also a European Engineer, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of both the IET and of the IMechE in the UK.

Volunteer Award for Meritorious Service 2018

The Award is made in recognition of outstanding services to the Institution’s international network which cannot be recognised in the local region.

A maximum of two awards per year can be made subject to their being nominations of sufficient merit.

All active volunteer members of the Institution living outside of the UK are eligible to make a nomination or to be nominated for the Award. The nomination must also be sponsored by the Regional Chair. The winner of the award is decided by the ISB Chair, advised by the International Strategy Board.
