Institution news
The Institution has accredited the mechanical engineering course at Coleg Sir Gâr and as a result, degree students at the college will now be eligible to gain Incorporated engineer status (IEng) when they finish.
The status demonstrates that they have reached a UK standard for professional engineering competence. The standard is supported by the Engineering Council, which sets the benchmark for academic accreditation at colleges and universities.
As part of the accreditation process, the Institution investigated a number of features at the college including academic rigor, quality of delivery, facilities and staff excellence, and industry experience.
Alan King, a business development manager for the Institution, explained the benefits of professional registration to students, at an event at the college’s engineering facility in Llanelli.
Representing the manufacturing industry, guest speaker Paul Byard, National Director for EEF Wales, also explained to students how training was playing a key part in the development of the manufacturing sector in Wales. He said he hoped that 5,000 apprentices would enter the industry over the next 10 years.
Coleg Sir Gâr lecturer, Dr Chris Davies, said the accreditation confirmed the “high level” and “reputation” of the college’s engineering qualifications.
“The college has a long tradition of offering higher education awards in mechanical engineering and is established within the University of Wales Trinity Saint David Group,” he said.
“Learners at the college are able to start their engineering education from the age of 16 and progress to degree level within one institution which is a unique characteristic and benefit for local students.”
Courses are also designed with the needs of employers and local industry in mind.
