Chartered Engineer fits the bills

PE

Chris Cheater’s exhortations regarding the designation of the word ‘engineer’ will come to nought

After more than 50 years membership of the Institution I am well acquainted with the status concerns of engineers.

Chris Cheater’s anger at his treatment by insurance underwriters is completely understandable. However, I fear his exhortations regarding the designation of the word ‘engineer’ will come to nought.

The English speaking world uses the word to describe a wide range of people. The educational programme necessary to change that is beyond the capabilities of the professional institutions or government.

All need not be lost, however. What is necessary, I suggest, is a single, simple designation which clearly indicates that the person described is a professional, academically qualified, and the equal of any other professional. ’’Chartered Engineer‘’ fills the bill nicely.
