Almost half of new hires will be in India and China with 77 in the UK

Engineering group Bosch is to recruit 9,000 engineering graduates worldwide this year, with almost half of the recruits coming from India and China and just 77 from the UK.

The German engineering group plans to take on 2,400 engineers in India, 1,950 in China and 900 in Germany. It employs some 360,000 people in 60 countries.

Bosch employs around 4,000 people in the UK across several sites, including at heating company Worcester Bosch and at plants that develop and make consumer power tools, lawnmowers and automotive electronics.

The 77 engineers being taken on in the UK compared to the thousands in India and China reflects the Asian countries rapidly growing markets, Bosch said.

It said: “Although this figure is not as big as India and China’s, which are booming economies, the UK is the largest European country for Bosch in terms of sales turnover, outside of Germany. Our focus is on engineering and therefore the largest hire is in that sector as well.

The 77 engineering graduates are out of a total of 104 graduate hires Bosch is recruiting for this year in the UK.

The company is looking to take on mechanical and electrical engineers, and particularly wants graduates with an “IT background”.

Christoph Kübel, director of industrial relations at Bosch, said: “We are increasing the number of associates hired for software design and development. As connectivity expands in every business sector, from Mobility Solutions to Industrial Technology, the importance of software does too,” .

Bosch develops and supplies both components and products, for sectors such as automotive, consumer goods, energy and building technology. As well as the 9,000 engineering graduates, it is planning to recruit 3,000 graduates in non-engineering roles worldwide.
