It should be made mandatory for all cyclists to undergo a proficiency test

Whilst there is so much concern about the blind spots of buses and heavy goods vehicles, has anyone thought to educate the cyclists and motorcyclists that deliberately go into these blind spots (News, PE May)?

As a former heavy goods driver, I have often positioned the articulated vehicle so that the rear is very close to the kerb whilst the front is near, or on, the crown of the road. This was done to try to prevent cyclists coming in on my blind side when I’ve got the indicator on to turn left.

No matter what is done, there will always be some idiot in a hurry to get to the front of the queue, irrespective of the consequences, knowing full well that the driver will be held responsible.

It should be made mandatory for all cyclists to undergo a proficiency test. Also all cyclists should use the cycle path/lane instead of the road, and not ride abreast of each other so that they can have a chat.

I have had near misses whilst driving my car because cyclists are chatting on a mobile phone or sending text messages with no control of the cycle other than a good sense of balance. Isn’t it strange that the law turns a blind eye to such things yet will pounce on a motorist!
