Manufacturer confirms job losses due to restructuring at Gaydon headquarters
Aston Martin is planning restructuring at its Gaydon headquarters, a move which is set to result in some job losses, the company has confirmed.
While the exact number of redundancies is yet to be confirmed, the 2,100-strong workforce will undergo a consultation process before the end of the year as part of the manufacturer's expansion plans.
Aston Martin said: “Since the start of 2015, we have been taking actions in support of operational performance, involving both hiring for key positions and eliminating certain positions. That rebalancing process continues through this year and as a result, we will be making some positions redundant.
“Globally, we have just over 2,100 employees, reflecting both production and non-production areas. Our focus for the remainder of the year is on non-production areas and we are asking all functions to achieve certain reductions based on business plan requirements.
“Details of those reductions are not being disclosed at this time.”
Andy Palmer took over the role of Aston Martin chief executive one year ago and has since worked on reshaping the company and its product line-up. The manufacturer has reported that it’s ‘on budget’ for 2015 with strong UK sales and has several new models planned for the coming years. Due to the soaring demand for the DBX sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the UK, the model is likely to be part of expansion plans. Prime Minister David Cameron is encouraging Aston Martin to build the DBX in Wales, with some vacated Ministry of Defence land in St Athan apparently earmarked. “In Wales I think there is real potential to vacate Ministry of Defence land at St Athan, and we’re willing to make that available as part of efforts to persuade Aston Martin Lagonda to manufacture their new prestige SUV in the UK,” Cameron said. An announcement regarding the vehicle from Aston Martin is expected in the next few weeks.
