Ad campaign needed

PE

How about running an advertisement campaign on television, papers, internet and billboards?

Your Editor’s Comment, urging engineers to talk to classes about the value of engineering, was an interesting read (PE January). The IMechE has done much in this area but it has been on a small scale. So how about running an advertisement campaign on television, papers, internet and billboards? Or a Twitter campaign, with a hashtag such as #IAmAnEngineer.

Create an advert showing the people behind the products – the engineers behind smartphones, cars and the popular games that the public play.

Engineers could get involved – create their own mini video clips or photos of themselves standing next to their products, and upload them to social media sites such as Vine, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest.

This type of campaign will be costly and requires a lot of involvement. But it might trigger the passion within children and the public to think of engineering. It might also, maybe, trigger the passion that many engineers have lost.
