Tipton-based Midland Tool and Design is partnering with a US firm to provide the stampings for a power regeneration system for the New York subway.
Midland Tool and Design’s “Modulam” system is used on 50-tonne, 60-tonne or 200-tonne presses, with bespoke tooling elements that are designed and manufactured in-house. These elements can be made from steel or carbide.
The company claims that the accuracy of the system eliminates the need to re-qualify parts at the production stage because all prototypes produced are to specification.
Darren Booton, managing director of the company, says: “The accuracy of the laminations is crucial to the success of the project, and by using the Modulam system we can ensure stampings meet their exact requirements immediately, meaning the project can begin without any delay manufacturing an accurate prototype.”
The flywheels produced by the Midland Tool and Design will be used on the New York subway system. The flywheels will convert and reuse the energy generated.
