Held at the Hilton Treetops Hotel, the focus of the event was the presentation of certificates, signed and awarded by the Institution’s Chief Executive, Stephen Tetlow CEng FIMechE MBE. Attendees also enjoyed an occasion to meet Aberdeen Committee members, and to find out more about the Institution’s events and activities planned for the rest of the year.
While not all of the 150 engineers from the area who had become EngTech, IEng, CEng or Fellow, and had been invited to the certificate presentation, were able to attend on the night, they all received their respective certificates upon election to membership.
However, Stephen Tetlow was delighted to commend the many recipients of certificates personally, taking the time to describe the duties and achievements of each engineer throughout the ceremony.
Toby Knight EngTech MIMechE completed his six-year apprentice at Score Group plc. Toby is now involved in valve related technical training for Score employees as well as a range of global clients. Stephen Tetlow followed his attendance at the Hilton evening with a visit to Score’s site in Peterhead, in the North-East of Scotland, on 21st May. Toby commented:
“Despite being the only Engineering Technician at the event I felt welcomed very quickly by everyone. I think it’s important to have a connection and sense of community like this within the industry, as all those I spoke to were keen on helping me progress in my career. My professional registration adds authenticity to my current role as a technical trainer. It is certainly respected by all those who understand and recognise what it stands for.”
There were nearly 50 certificates of Membership for those who had recently become Chartered Engineers. The vast majority gained their experience in the offshore industries, working for prestigious companies such as Shell, Xodus, Technip, GE, Woodgroup, BP, Aker Solutions and XPD8.
Fazal Ur Rahman CEng MIMechE has a Masters in Petroleum Technology from the University of Karachi. He is currently working as a Reliability Engineer, focusing mainly on RCFAs, deferral and vulnerabilities management and long term sustainable reliability improvement projects. Fazal, who has worked for BP for more than 12 years, summed up what it meant to him:
“Being a Chartered Engineer confirms your expertise and ability to take decisions. BP’s Vice President of Reliability and Maintenance has made clear the value he places on professional registration, and showed the significance placed on the achievement. For that I am very proud.”
William Steward CEng MIMechE graduated from the University of Bradford in Mechanical Engineering in 2008. Working for AMEC, in 2010 he moved to Aberdeen to pursue his career in the Oil and Gas industry and develop his engineering skills. He said he is “really pleased” that he has become Chartered, and would like to thank those who supported him.
Since graduating in 2009 with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, Hayley Welsh IEng MIMechE has worked for Prospect Flow Solutions and Subsea 7, and has been at PDi Ltd since 2013. She is a Senior Analyst, performing marine dynamic analysis and finite element analysis for the installation of rigid pipelines. Hayley, one of three Incorporated Engineers who were awarded their certificates on the night, feels that her professional registration and membership of the Institution is a fundamental part of her identity as an engineer.
“It demonstrates to peers that I am a competent engineer with a sound knowledge and understanding of my profession; hence, a reliable and valuable resource to my employer. Gaining IEng status with Institution was key for my career progression as an Engineering Analyst in the Oil and Gas industry.”
Five CEng Fellows were honoured during the evening:
Eur Ing Ila Glennie CEng FIMechE, who has worked for a number of years for BP, is a STEM ambassador and a senior teaching fellow in subsea engineering at the University of Aberdeen.
Ross Mackay CEng FIMechE began his career in the shipyards, and has worked throughout the oil and gas industry becoming a Certifying Authority as a Principal Mechanical Engineer. Ross is a consultant in the industry.
Michael O’Sullivan CEng FIMechE is an acknowledged expert in unbonded flexible pipe technology. Michael is currently North Sea Regional Manager for Wood Group Kenny in Aberdeen.
Eur Ing Andrew Williams CEng FIMechE started his career as an apprentice; spent several years as a Corporate Technical Authority, and now works as an oil and gas industry consultant, currently with Shell.
Eur Ing Allan Parkinson CEng FIMechE, a Mechanical Technical Authority, works for Petrofac in offshore projects and operations. He has served on Professional Review Interview boards in South Wales and, more recently, in Aberdeen. Allan commented on his delight at being elected a Fellow:
“Being honoured as a Fellow is a great kudos following a long career in industry, which has included the privilege of being able to develop MPDS and support the development of younger engineers through a number of companies. It has been a long term aspiration of mine, since the days of Student and Graduate memberships.”
The Institution, and the Scottish Region in particular, would again like to congratulate all the newly honoured Members and Fellows from Aberdeenshire, and thank them for the pleasure of their company during the ceremony in Aberdeen.
