Offshore lifting and mechanical services company will create new jobs

A Scottish engineering company has announced several major contracts that will secure existing jobs and create new roles at its base in Aberdeen.

The Sparrow Group, which provides offshore lifting and mechanical handling services to the oil and gas industry, has signed and renewed contracts totalling more than £190million with Shell, BP, CNR, ConocoPhillips, Perenco and Wood Group.

These contracts will secure 134 existing jobs on and offshore, while 54 new positions have already been created with more expected to follow.

Sparrow Group's chief executive officer, Doug Sedge, said: “We have a highly-skilled and specialised workforce and it is our reputation for getting the job done that is fuelling our success and current growth. In a tight market for skills, clients know that they can rely on Sparrows to have the people and processes to deliver on demand, and the training and development resources to build for the future.”

The company's largest renewal contract is with the oil giant, Shell. The firm will provide crane and lifting services on all Shell installations in the UK and Dutch sectors of the North Sea for five years. The contract will have the option of two one-year extensions.

A separate contract will see the firm deliver offshore crane operation and maintenance service, including onshore engineering support, across CNR's five platforms in the North Sea.

Established in 1973, Sparrow Group specialises in offshore lifting, crane engineering and services, mechanical handling, pipe and cable lay systems, fluid power engineering, equipment rentals and competence training. The company employs 1,750 people across 19 locations.
