A New Student Chapter for Nigeria

The Institution’s Nigeria Young Member Section officially establishes the Anambra State University Student Chapter in Nigeria.

At Anambra State University on 30 July 2014, the Institution’s Nigeria Young Member Section officially established the Student Chapter of Anambra State University in Nigeria.

Anambra State university, the second Institution Student Chapter in Nigeria, is coordinated by Ifeanyi Ezenwaka, with Mr Austin I Gbasouzor as the university’s Academic Liaison Officer. The Student Chapter currently has 32 members and is fully supported by the Nigeria Young Member Section (YMS).

The four-hour launch ceremony was attended by 250 audience guests, including Engr. Dr. Chima Mbachu (Dean, Faculty of Engineering), Engr. Dr. Philip N. Atanmo (Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering) eight lecturers of the Mechanical Engineering Department and the NUTA_BOLTS Team, the first Formula Student Team in Nigeria.

The event started with a welcome note from the host coordinator (Ifeanyi Ezenwaka) He welcomed the invited guest and promised all present a great day.

A technical section led by the Dean of Engineering faculty, Engr. Dr. Chima Mbachu who gave a talk on “The need for Engineering Students to be practically oriented” followed. In his speech, he acknowledged the effort of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in their quest to improve the world through Engineering. He encouraged the students to join the institution and become active member so as to be exposed to the practical Engineering activities, such as the Formula Student competition, and to also enter and compete in most of the challenges organized locally and internationally by the Institution. He also commended the effort of the NUTA_BOLTS team in taking the lead as the first Nigeria team to participate in the Formula Student competition, also winning the “Global population Challenge” organized by the institution.

The Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering  (Engr. Dr. Philip N. Atanmo) also enlightened the students on “The Role of Research in Engineering”.

Afterwards, the new members of the institution was inducted into the student’s chapter by the IMechE Regional YM Rep. (Mr. Martins N. Alozie). He later encouraged the inductees to avoid anything that will make them to be theoretical buoyant and practically weak.

The highlight of the event was the presentation by the NUTA_BOLTS team on Formula Students competition led by Ifeanyichukwu U. Onyenanu (Team leader). The team displayed their FS2014 car and promised that the first Nigerian locally fabricated race car nicknamed (UGO) will be on track at Silverstone circuit by FS2015 competition.
