The last two weeks have proved to be two of the most successful weeks in the Institution’s history in terms of media coverage. The Institution achieved its third front page of the year for the Global Food Waste report – only the fourth time the Institution has ever featured on a front page of a UK national newspaper. The Institution’s Head of Energy and Environment, Dr Tim Fox, was interviewed on BBC World, ahead of his trip to India to publicise the Institution’s food waste report, as well as for the main launch of the Natural Disasters report. While there he will be meeting with over 40 journalists from publications like the Times of India, Hindustan Times and the Financial Express. The Institution’s reactive comments on the new deal struck between the Government and EdF to build a new nuclear power plant in Somerset were also widely picked up – by among others the Daily Mail and Bloomberg. There was broadcast coverage for Formula Student on ITV Anglia, as well as a 32 page supplement on the event in Racecar Engineering. The Institution’s Patrick Finlay was also interviewed by the BBC about biomedical engineering and the Institution’s latest Engineering Heritage Award was covered by ITV and the Telegraph and Argus.

Food Waste

The Institution made it onto the front page of the Daily Mail this week, when the Global Food Waste Not, Want Not report was cited in articles about food waste by Tesco. This is the third front page the Institution has featured in this year. The Institution’s Dr Tim Fox was also interviewed on BBC World on the issue of food waste

UK nuclear deal agreed for Hinkley Point C

The Institution’s comments on the deal struck between the Government and EdF to build a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset were also picked up in:

 

The Institution’s adaptation report is cited by an expert being interviewed on Sky News about new nuclear plants in the UK (mention is about 6 minutes into the clip).

 

Formula Student

Racecar Engineering published a 32 page review of Formula Student, including a feature on this year’s winning electric car and an article from a Coventry University student about whether spaceframe chassis design has been optimised.

Natural Disasters report

The Institution’s new report Natural Disasters: Saving Lives Today, Building Resilience for Tomorrow received good trade media coverage ahead of its main launch in Chennai, India next week. Apart from Reuters the report was also picked up in:

Comments from Dr Tim Fox on Scotland’s energy sector were picked up by the Scottish Express.

News about the Institution’s Engineering Heritage Award for the Webb Coal Tank No. 1054 locomotive was also picked up in Keighley News and Telegraph and Argus

Institution President hosted an event at 1 Birdcage Walk announcing a new Dervy business park. The news was also picked up by Insider Media. The President also featured in an article called ‘My Week’ for the Derby Telegraph (link not available, but please contact the media team for a PDF) which outlines his typical activities for the week working for the Institution and Rolls Royce.
