The UK automotive industry has suffered high-profile departures and factory closures. Can the industry be saved? We asked our readers what should be done.

"The government’s comments cause some uncertainty about the future of motor vehicles and the motor industry in general. I think the decline will continue."

Steve Downward

"Cancel Brexit for a start, then use our engineering skills to become the best in electric vehicle construction while at the same time continuing to find less-polluting power production to match the increased demand for electricity."

Jolyon Lomax

"Yes, it can. It just needs commitment from government and the British business and investment sectors. We also need to buy British – that means British made, not necessarily British owned!"

C Murray

"It doesn’t need saving – just continue with the higher-value cars we produce well (Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, McLaren). With the UK’s higher labour costs, it’s never going to be able to compete in the lower-value bands. "

Michael

Closures tend to come from excess capacity and high competitiveness. It seems to me this will be self-governing by supply and demand. The UK needs to be more competitive than neighbouring regions to avoid getting swamped by imports. Being customer-focused and really delivering the best price/value ratio will win the day.

Jonathan A C Knew

"Yes. Focus on reviewing the manufacturing process – can we automate and reduce costs? Refocus on the markets – can pricing be reviewed to maintain a decent profit level?"

Sandy McKay
