'Engineering needs to speak with a louder, clearer voice': chief executive Dr Alice Bunn

I am excited and honoured to be joining the Institution as chief executive.

The IMechE has a formidable reputation, and I am really passionate about promoting its place as a beacon in the world of mechanical engineering. The IMechE’s vision of “improving the world through engineering” has never been more relevant, given the challenges we face.

I have seen already, in particular through my previous role as international director at the UK Space Agency, the fundamental contribution that engineering makes to everyday lives. I have seen first-hand how engineers are able to use their expertise, experience and creativity to come up with solutions where it seemed that none existed or offer possibilities that people had never even thought of.

Some may still associate the age of invention with the time when the Institution was created, but I’m convinced that the age of invention is now! I am looking forward to working with you to raise awareness of the tremendous value of engineering to society, promoting the work of our members and employees, and really shining a spotlight on the IMechE.

The pandemic has brought so many challenges, but one positive side effect has been an increased public interest in science and engineering. People have come to understand more about how Stem and engineering can provide solutions to the problems we face.

We mustn’t lose this lead. We must drive the discussion about many of the issues that the public cares about, such as climate change, education, skills and the future of transport, and in doing so highlight the role of engineering in improving outcomes. These are global discussions that our worldwide membership is well placed to contribute to.

However, I am convinced that, to achieve the best results, we will need to work in closer collaboration with other organisations in the sector, as there are so many initiatives that overlap, and engineering needs to speak with a louder, clearer voice.

The next few months will be momentous for engineering, as well as the Institution. In November, the UK will host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow to fight climate change and I know many of you have a leading role in research and developing technologies to cut emissions.

Two months later in January 2022, the Institution will be celebrating its 175th anniversary, which is such an impressive milestone. We are planning a programme of activities, with details to be published on the website soon, and I hope many of you will join in the celebrations.

Another priority is that we need to make decisions about the future of our iconic headquarters on Birdcage Walk, which needs major refurbishment.

With so much opportunity to contribute to the world around us, engineering needs to attract the best and the brightest. I have been really inspired to hear about the diversity and inclusion work under way. I am convinced we will be most successful if we draw from all the many talents and ideas across the organisation in an inclusive way, and then unite behind a set of priorities that will see us delivering the most impact from engineering to society.

I would like to thank the wonderful efforts of Dr Colin Brown, the executive and senior leadership teams for their warm welcome and their work to help me prepare for this role. There is a lot of opportunity ahead. I am very much looking forward to leading the Institution into its next phase.
