Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, Ulster University.

Dr Abid is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with expertise in sustainable energy systems, particularly heat pumps and thermal energy storage for decarbonised heating. He holds a PhD in Applied Thermodynamics from Ulster University and has worked across academia and research institutions in the UK and the Middle East.

As a member of the EESG Board, he contributes insights from research and practice in applied thermodynamics and renewable energy technologies. His research focus is on demand-side management, heat recovery, and low-emission heating and cooling systems. Dr Abid is an advocate for sustainability in engineering education and works to embed ESD principles into curricula. Dr Abid is also a Climate STEM Ambassador, supporting outreach and awareness initiatives that promote engineering’s role in addressing climate change. 

Emmanuel Atiba is a Chartered Energy Engineer with cross-disciplinary experience in wind energy, project finance, and environmental impact assessments.

Currently based in Edinburgh, he has led the technical design and pre-construction phases of UK onshore wind projects, managed multi-million-pound contractor budgets, and delivered yield assessments for both wind and solar developments.

Emmanuel holds an MSc in Metals and Energy Finance from Imperial College London and is a published researcher in renewable systems and thermofluids. A STEM ambassador and active member of several professional institutions, he is passionate about sustainable development, policy advocacy, and engineering leadership for Net Zero. Emmanuel joins the IMechE EESG to contribute his technical insight and promote knowledge-sharing that bridges research, policy, and practice.

Haris is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and Associate in ESG and Sustainability at Hollis Global, where he specialises in building performance, energy modelling and decarbonisation across UK and European property portfolios. His work spans TM54 operational energy modelling, TM52 and TM59 overheating analysis, EPC and MEES compliance, ESG due diligence assessments, as well as CRREM and UKNZCBS aligned Net Zero Carbon roadmaps.

Previously, Haris worked as lead consultant on a nationwide smart HVAC and BEMS controls

programme across more than 500 hotels that achieved 40% energy savings, while at SMS Plc.

He also served as Engineering Lead on Santander UK's London headquarters redevelopment, providing technical assurance across HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems through design, construction, commissioning and handover.

Haris holds an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an MSc in Sustainable Energy Technologies from the University of Southampton, where his postgraduate research developed stochastic models of natural ventilation and occupant behaviour to improve building energy prediction. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Low Carbon Consultant, and a Low Carbon Energy Assessor Level 5.

Through EESG, he looks forward to contributing his experience in building performance and decarbonisation strategy and supporting the group's work connecting engineering practice with sustainability policy.

CEng MIMechE

Rouha is the Senior Vice President, Low Carbon Solutions at an Energy Consultancy Sproule ERCE. She has over 18 years of international experience in climate policy advisory, decarbonization strategy, industrial construction, manufacturing and low-carbon infrastructure. She advises lenders’ on financing energy transition projects such as UK’s Liverpool Bay CO2 storage project.

Previously, Rouha spent over a decade at Tata Steel Europe, where she developed decarbonisation roadmaps for major industrial assets in the UK and Netherlands, including initiatives aligned with national climate agendas.

Rouha has an Executive MBA from the University of Cambridge. Her research focussed on climate change policies in four major European economies to propose ways through which greenhouse gas emissions intensive industries can collaborate with each other and with policy makers to expedite industrial decarbonisation.  She also led a project “Business models for interplay of circular economy with IoT” for the Cambridge Circular Economy Centre and Deloitte Belgium as part of Marie Skłodowska-Curie RISE grant from the European Commission.

James leads a sustainability team within the UK defence sector. His work focuses on integrating environmental and sustainability considerations to align and develop policy, tools and processes to support informed decisions; with priority areas including emissions reduction, circular economy, sustainable procurement and energy. He is particularly interested in working collaboratively to share best practice and drive collective progress.

James is a Chartered Engineer with over 17 years experience in defence acquisition, spanning project engineering, delivery, systems engineering, innovation, transformation and sustainability.

He is also a member of the IMechE Climate Change & Sustainability policy panel. Contributing to the development of IMechE’s first CC&S Statement in 2026.

Paul is a chartered mechanical engineer who has been part of the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group at the IMechE for the past fifteen years.

Passionate about sustainability and also an avid aviation enthusiast, Paul offers a unique perspective on the aerospace industry. Working as a Principal Structures and Thermal engineer for Orbex in the UK, Paul is working to develop ‘Prime’ - the UK’s first vertical launch rocket for small satellites. Paul has led many space and aerospace projects for Airbus, Boeing, ESA and NASA. His personal research interests include sustainability within aerospace and how we can transition to a more sustainable industry.

Associate Professor and Head of Subject, Northumbria University, UK

Dr. Shahzad earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2014. He is an expert in water treatment, heating and cooling systems, and the circular economy, with innovations that led to the founding of EcoTechX Limited, a spinout from Northumbria University. His groundbreaking work has garnered several prestigious awards, including the IET Excellence and Innovation Award (2023), as well as multiple ASHRAE Innovation and National Energy Globe Awards. His research has been highlighted in major media channels such as The Guardian, Yahoo Business, Nature Middle East, and Arab News.
As the lead of the SAFECONOMY project, Dr. Shahzad focuses on training early-career researchers in engineering entrepreneurship through an online platform. With 11 international patents, four authored books, 22 book chapters, and over 150 peer-reviewed articles, his contributions to sustainable water solutions are globally recognized. He has been named among the top 2% of scientists worldwide for 2024, with his work featured in UNESCO and Oxford encyclopedias. Dr. Shahzad is also a dedicated mentor, serving as a STEM and CyberFirst ambassador, a Chartered Engineer, and Chair of both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE UK) area committee and the IMechE Chartered Engineer panel.

 

 

CEO of Riskoa Ltd

Roger is the CEO of Riskoa Ltd, a digital software company specialising in sustainability solutions, and Managing Director of Riscon Solutions Ltd, a consultancy focused on technical change management and sustainability. With over 20 years of experience in industries spanning aerospace, manufacturing, and international development, Roger brings a unique blend of technical and strategic expertise.

At Riskoa, he leads the development of Emvide, an AI-powered lifecycle assessment (LCA) tool that enables businesses to measure and reduce their environmental impact with efficiency and accuracy. His work with Emvide focuses on advancing Scope 3 emissions reporting and product carbon footprint (PCF) calculations, particularly for industries with complex supply chains.

Roger is actively involved with the ADS Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) framework, where he has helped design the ESG and digital pillars to drive sustainability in the aerospace sector. As a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, Roger is committed to leveraging his expertise to support innovation in sustainability. His work with the Energy, Environment, and Sustainability Group at IMechE reflects his dedication to advancing sustainable practices in engineering, with a focus on scalable digital solutions for a net-zero future.

Retired

After graduating from the University of Cambridge in Metallurgy, Daphne joined Babcock and Wilcox (now Altrad Babcock Ltd) in their research centre in Renfrew near Glasgow. She worked on stress analysis and in particular creep and fatigue of components, including pipework.

In 1989 she moved to Cadogan Consultants which has eventually become HKA. Initially her work related to hospital boilers, chimneys and incinerators. This included a survey of clinical waste incinerators in Scotland in response to new environmental legislation which came in in 1995. Subsequent regulations on emissions from crematoria led to supervision of replacement cremators at Perth crematorium.

The focus of the company changed over the years, moving into giving advice to lawyers as an expert witness. Investigations were carried out, reports written and evidence given in courts and arbitrations. Cases ranged from personal injury (for example a broken walking stick which caused a fall) to large international arbitrations including a failed turbine blade at a hydroelectric power station in Romania.

Daphne has been on the board of the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group since its formation. Although not working directly in the field of sustainability she takes a keen interest in the work and has edited the newsletter for nearly 20 years.
