Nicola Yau

Nicola Yau is a Biomedical Engineering student entering the final year of her Integrated Master’s (MEng) at the University of Hull. Her academic work focuses on inclusive innovation in women’s health, particularly in menstrual and personal product design. Her undergraduate research on the Tribological Performance of Sanitary Pads was recognised at TriboUK 2025.

Beyond her technical interests, Nicola is deeply committed to STEM outreach and public engagement. She mentors young students through IntoUniversity, supports prospective engineers as a student ambassador, and previously delivered a winning presentation on Smart Tampons with pH Sensors at the IMechE Speak Out for Engineering competition.

As a member of the Biomedical Division Early Career Professional Committee, Nicola brings a passion for user-centred design and a strong belief that engineering must reflect the diversity of the people it serves. She hopes to amplify underrepresented healthcare needs, support early-career engineers in finding their voice, and contribute to a more inclusive and impactful biomedical engineering community.
