Railway Challenge Volunteer

Become a guest judge, track controller or scrutineer for the annual Railway Challenge in the East Midlands.

Each annual Railway Challenge cycle kicks-off in October, ending with a final event in late June/early July of the following year.

There are a number of exciting roles available for you to participate in the Railway Challenge.

Controller
Planning and controlling the scheduling of the final; Liaising with the hosts and the competitors

Scrutineer
Scrutinising the entries to ensure that they meet all the requirements of the competition

Business Case Judge
Attending the business case presentations by all teams and assessing them against the rules

Presentation Judge
Attending the team’s presentations and assessing them against the rules

Track Challenge Judge
Attending one or more of the various on-track challenges and assessing them against the rules

Time commitment and location

The Railway Challenge is hosted in Melton Mowbray (East Midlands) in June/July each year. The time commitment for the different roles vary:

Controller - 5 days at the Challenge Final
Scrutineer - 5 days at the Challenge Final
Business Case Judge - 2 days remote attendance
Presentation Judge - 1 day at the Challenge Final
Track Challenge Judge - 2 days at the Challenge Final

Requirements and training

No specific training required as briefing information will be provided. Knowledge of the railway industry and/or railway education would be an advantage.

Those with a link to any of the teams will not be able to act as judges.

How could you develop in this role?

Experience of managing/judging/supporting a competition involving teams of students, graduates and apprentices.
