Vijay joined IMechE in 1966 and became a Fellow in 1998.
He is a mechanical, electrical and production engineer. He studied engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, 1964-65, and the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Jamalpur, 1966-69.
He was an executive with the Indian Railways till 1979, worked for UNCTAD in East and Southern Africa as a railway and logistics specialist and was the Botswana Government’s Transport Advisor in 1987-90. He now has his own company, Chakra Infrastructure Consultants, in Bangalore.
Vijay has undertaken about 80 projects in 28 countries in railways, transport, logistics, trade facilitation, energy, industrial and urban development. Besides engineering, his skills include business transformation. structuring PPPs, regulation, policy formulation and institutional strengthening. His services have been used by international organizations such as the World Bank (staff consultant), several Governments and the private sector.
In 2018 Vijay spearheaded the initiative to establish an Aerospace Division India Centre. He was its first Chair and has been instrumental, through this, in linking IMechE with India’s premier science and engineering institution, the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore. Learned Society events are organized for members and other engineers at its Aerospace Department. As a volunteer he has been a Visitor for the Benevolent Fund and was the first Chair of the Southern India Panel. He continues to be an Interview Facilitator and assists with expanding IMechE’s membership footprint.
